This is what happens when you run 35mm film through a camera designed for larger format film. These were all shot on my grandfathers 100 year old camera, a No. 1A Kodak Jr. (pictured last).
A Trip to the Butterfly Conservatory
It has been quite a while since I have been able to get out with my camera for some fun shots. I have been busy working on freelance work in the studio for the past several months.
I recently received a new flash diffuser for macro photography and I decided to test it at the The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory. I knew I would have plenty of opportunities in this target rich environment.
I don’t think I can really call these “wildlife photography” since the butterflies are in captivity and they are not skittish around people.
Happy Independence Day!
Here is a little Flat Lay fun.
Trying to hide!
As I casually looked out my front door I noticed someone looking back at me. Fortunately my camera was near by. I literally shot this guy through my glass front door while he was trying to hide in the tree.
Happy Easter
Happy Easter.
Last evening I picked up one of the last lilies that Publix had left and decided to shoot it. I can’t decide if I like the single or double flower better.
Just Hangin' Around
I made it to Big Pine Key about 10 minuets before sunrise. There were a pair of Belted Kingfishers zipping around and a juvenile heron unsuccessfully hunting for fish. I always seemed to be in the wrong location because they were just out of reach to be able to get any good shots. I would move a dozen or so yards and then the activity was back where I had been.
I have noticed the the Osprey don’t seem to be early risers and they usually start fishing when the sun is a bit higher in the sky. In anticipation of their activity I positioned myself at the waters edge and waited. After a while and not seeing any Osprey I decided to relocate off the beach to an area where I had seen activity previously. It never fails, I looked back and saw an Osprey dive and emerge with a nice catch from the exact location where I was waiting for him. It would have been the perfect location had I stayed a bit longer since I would have had the wind and sun at my back assuring that he would have been well lit as he went in and then came out of the water facing upwind. I missed that one.
On my way back to my truck I stopped hoping to shoot the kingfishers. As I was waiting I noticed this Red-bellied Woodpecker land on the dead tree nearby. At least I got something today.
Who likes Sandpipers?
It had been a while since I was able to get out and shoot. I woke up this morning and decided to scout out a location in the keys that I had never visited before. The location was interesting and probably a good spot to return to but this morning there was no wildlife activity. I had two of my cameras with me but didn’t click the shutter once.
Still feeling frustrated that I didn’t get any images, I decided to go to Boca Chica Beach. Upon arrival, this too seemed like there was no action. After walking down to the end of the beach and still not finding anything of interest I turned around and started back to the car. Midway back I came upon a group of sandpipers foraging near the waters edge.
I hope you enjoy what I captured this afternoon.
Some Aerial Work Down at the Key West Bight.
I often take my camera to work with me and this day I am glad that I did. These gulls were circling the parking lot so I grabbed my camera. Click the image to view the slideshow.
JoeGarr.com goes live!
After several years in the making, JoeGarr.com goes live! I had wanted to register the domain name JoeGarr.com for quite some time, but it was already registered. For years I had been watching and waiting for this domain to become available. On each anniversary that the domain registration would expire I would hope that it would not be renewed. Amazingly, a few weeks ago the domain became available. Needless to say I wasted no time in registering the name for myself.
I will use this site to present some of my favorite photographic images that I have captured in the past and will continue to capture in the future. I will also use this blog to periodically show some of my most recent images and photographic endeavors as they occur.
I photograph, process and print all of my own work. A selection of my printed work can be viewed displayed full size inside the clothing shop of Key West Bait and Tackle, 241 Margaret Street, Old Town Key West (next to the Half Shell Raw Bar.) If you would like a print of your own, I have them available for purchase online or on location at the bait shop. You have the option of purchasing the images either unmounted printed directly onto a luster quality photo paper or mounted on a backing board. They are printed boarderless on 13" x 19" photo paper (unless otherwise noted) and have my signature in the lower right corner of the image.

Thank you and I hope you enjoy my site.
